The Magicians and The Magician King

OrangeYouGlad worked closely with Viking Books to conceptualize, design, and build custom web sites and promotional pieces for the first two books in the bestselling Magicians trilogy by Lev Grossman.

The Seven Golden Keys

The imaginary fable The Seven Golden Keys plays a pivotal role in The Magician King. When Viking Books asked OrangeYouGlad to make a promotional piece to help create awareness and excitement for the Magicians sequel — an important book for the publisher — we chose to focus on this crucial aspect of the novel and pitched creating physical copies of the actual fable.

For the book’s illustrations and dropcaps, we cut in designs out of linoleum blocks and made prints. Then we typeset the story, designed the interiors, and mocked everything up as a physical book.

Viking printed a couple thousand copies of The Seven Golden Keys for promotional giveaways online, distribution to various sales accounts, and to give out at various industry tradeshows. The book went on to be a massive national bestseller.

Fillory Postcards

For The Magician King, OrangeYouGlad also illustrated and designed a series of seven digital postcards based around the trilogy’s imaginary world of Fillory that a user could send electronically and include a custom message.

The postcards depict several realms Quentin visits on his journey in The Magician King. Each realm has a corresponding stamp — also designed by us — as a method of choosing a postcard.
